Fancy Frocks for Tiny Queens

Fancy Frocks for Tiny Queens

We all know that feeling you get when you buy a brand new perfect dress: it arrives in the mail, and you put it on and dance around in your bedroom making the skirt swish around and imagining all the shoes and makeup that’ll go perfectly with it. You keep checking every angle of yourself as if you can’t believe you look this damn good.

It’s a ridiculously giddy feeling, and it’s how we used to feel ten times a day when we were kids. Anything from a purple pair of shoes to a really smooth rock could fill us with excitement, but we always wanted that particular feeling of knowing we looked exactly like the queens we knew we were. Mum may think I’m just a kid, but I know I’m a lady too, and this sparkly blue shirt and yellow ballerina skirt will show her!

If only I’d had the perfect dress. The dress that made me look way fancier than I actually was (I ate chicken drumsticks with my whole face). The dress that said “I just decided not to wear my crown today but I totally have one”. If I could go back in time, I would buy one of Ponyboy’s new little vintage dresses and hand it to my three-foot-tall self and say, “Here you go, you little gromit. Your time has come. Try not to get any BBQ sauce on this.”

Sometimes it’s hard to convince a kid why they can’t wear gumboots paired with a sequined costume dress to a formal occasion, but with any of Ponyboy’s dresses for little girls, no cajoling will be needed. Your tiny queen will take one look and squeal with delight. Whether they feel their best in florals, fruit, or flamingos, any of these dresses are perfect to put her in for a wedding, a high tea, Grandma’s 70th, or Christmas Day. She’ll be begging to wear it on anything even close to a special occasion (breakfast counts, right?).

The best thing about these dresses is that they’re a whole outfit on their own. Pair them with some black or white shoes, add a cardigan if it’s a bit chilly, and you’re done! No hunting around under their bed for two items that match, just pull it out of the wardrobe and be done with it. By the way, no one will judge you for not putting your daughter’s hair in victory rolls (ain’t nobody got time for that). A neat ponytail with a bow is good enough, because the dress has already done all the work.

Check out the Kids section on the Ponyboy website to see the beautiful cuts and patterns, and get your tiny queen a fancy frock to last her through every occasion. They come in sizes for kids 3-12 years old, and the Audrey 50s Cream Floral even has built in tulle! Can you imagine a little four-year-old in her adorable dress? I think my heart just burst. Being Serene by Adara Enthaler
Being Serene by Adara Enthaler

Serene first thought of creating Ponyboy after having her first son. She had the dream of creating a shopping experience that was personalised and intimate: to create an atmosphere akin to trying on clothes at a friend’s house over a glass of wine (or three) and rocking out to excellent records. If you’re already a Ponyboy customer, you’ll know she nailed it.

The Belle of the Ball by Adara Enthaler
The Belle of the Ball by Adara Enthaler

I visited Ponyboy in April looking for a birthday dress with my eyes set on The Trixie Doll Dress, a figure-hugging red number with a plunging neckline. I tried it on, and it did look sexy, but there was something about the tightness that made me uncomfortable. That was when the lovely Serene suggested the Belle Dress. I was dubious at first of the ruched panel across the bust; wouldn’t it completely hide my god given gifts? But I was pleasantly surprised to find that the dress actually complimented my chest: the stretchy material and sweetheart neckline conformed to my shape whilst rising high enough that I wouldn’t be showing cleavage unless I wanted to.

My love for the classic red is also the reason I’m excited for the beautiful Rockabilly Gal Dress on its way to Ponyboy from Canadian company Happy Yellow Dress. The dress is the very epitome of cute, with white polkadots, rounded short sleeves, and two skirt pockets! I’m a sucker for a dress with pockets, as I’m sure any woman sick of handbags would be.
